KRIS ASHTON
'Freckle Face' – AntipodeanSF #241
A simple origin: the events at the start of this story are steeped in fact. My wife and I do have a ‘Freckle Face’ plant and it has been part of the family for at least a decade. It appeared to wave at me one morning and I couldn’t feel any obvious draught to cause it (although I suspect it was due to our ducted air conditioning).
I had no clear plot in mind when I began writing; it was the first time in a long time I just let the situation unfold. The story has quite a lot of wordplay and nuance, unusual for me – as is its brevity, which made it ideal for AntipodeanSF, another Australian market I had hoped to crack one day.
